Homes for sale with their own private bunkers – lovePROPERTY

Today, our houses aren't exactly short of amazing features, but with security more important to homeowners than ever, it's no wonder that private survival shelters are fast becoming property must-haves.
From a cattle farm in Tennessee with everything you could need to see out a disaster, to a luxurious mountain home in Idaho with an awesome underground secret, these properties each come complete with an impenetrable hideaway. Click or scroll on to step inside…
Homes with bunkers don't always come with million-dollar price tags, as this unique A-frame mountain home proves. Located on Mountain Lion Pass in Globe, Arizona, the property offers unparalleled, 360-degree views of the majestic El Capitan Mountain and is both private and wonderfully secluded.
Less than 20 years old, the 1,111-square-foot home is well-built and ready to be lived in. It has a log cabin feel with a durable metal roof, however, the buyer may wish to carry out minor cosmetic work.
There's a lounge, dining space, kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor and a lofted mezzanine above, where two bedrooms lie.
But, of course, that isn’t all this property has to offer. Hidden on the nine-acre estate is an 800-square-foot underground bunker, equipped with solar panels. The steel culvert bunker is essentially an impenetrable tunnel, inside which you can create secure living spaces. At the moment, the bunker is bare and needs to be renovated to make it comfortable and suited for prolonged stays.
The property also boasts a convenient one-car garage, housing a private well with a 1,500-gallon reserve tank, a huge freezer chest and a 24-battery system (24v/220). There’s also a Titon on-demand water heater, a propane range and a 28,000 BTU air-conditioning and heating unit, so you'll want for nothing if you buy this place. If you fancy it, it's for sale right now for a mere $295,000 (£233k).
You'd be forgiven for thinking this family home in Port Orchard, Washington, was an ordinary residence. However, the unassuming property is hiding a big secret. And, priced at just $364,000 (£287k), it could be well within your reach. Let's take a closer look…
Spanning just 1,224 square feet, the house is compact but has everything you could need. There's an open-plan living area, with space for a lounge, dining room and kitchen. It also has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as plenty of scope for renovating and adding value.
Yet it’s what’s lurking in the nearly half-acre garden that will be of more interest. Tucked at the rear of the property and hard to spot, is an amazing bunker. At the moment, the bunker features a rather flimsy-looking entrance door, but with a secure new one in place, this will be the ultimate place to hide out in an emergency.
Inside, the bunker boasts a simple, exposed plywood palette with a built-in bench. Ready to be converted into something far more inviting, the abandoned bunker has enough space for bunk beds, a kitchenette and a small bathroom.
The property also provides a huge shop with a bathroom, two heat sources and a custom woodshop with sliding doors to accommodate large projects. In total, there are four outbuildings ready and waiting to be rescued.
Anyone looking for a home with a job thrown in should pay attention to this amazing option. The cattle farm is positioned on more than 37 acres of peaceful, fenced pastureland overlooking Cordell Hull Lake in Smith County, Tennessee. As well as providing some truly breathtaking scenery, the farm has plenty of extras that are sure to entice.
Listed with Benchmark Realty for $575,000 (£454k), the property has a large pond and even comes with cattle. There’s a well-maintained brick ranch home, too, with a full, unfinished basement. It spans 1,200 square feet and has a large, eat-in kitchen, a living room, three bedrooms and a bathroom.
The house is a little old-fashioned and could definitely do with a makeover, but it has plenty of plus points. Almost all of the rooms feature refinished hardwood floors, plus there's a relatively new roof and HVAC system, as well as newly installed windows, which should make the renovation much cheaper and quicker. But obviously, that isn't all…
That’s right – in the heart of the estate, you’ll find a storm bunker. The compact shelter needs some attention to render it useable, but with the right cash injection, it could be a very handy home accessory. There’s also a two-car garage, a big red barn and various other storage buildings that are waiting to be converted into cool accommodation.
Located in iconic Lake Placid, Florida, this two-acre property has plenty to impress a potential buyer. As well as ample exterior space, there's also a spacious single-storey home that was constructed in 2008. A real fixer-upper, the retreat is ready to be turned into an amazing, ultra-secure estate.
Priced at $727,500 (£574k), the home is available via RE/MAX Realty Plus and offers a 4,546-square-foot interior. A real blank canvas, the rooms are generously sized but in need of some attention. In total, there are three bedrooms and four bathrooms, as well as an open-plan living room and a big kitchen. Plus, many of the rooms provide views of Lake June.
The basement level of this home could also be used as a standalone suite for guests and has plenty of space for a kitchen and its own exterior entrance. There's even scope for it to be turned into a second bunker because this pad already has one, hidden away in the garden.
The shelter is small and unfurnished, but has the potential to be turned into a luxurious safe room. What's more, there's an attached garage that comes with a large workshop and space for several vehicles, as well as a metal building that's ideal for additional storage. How's that for bang for your buck?
If you're seeking a secluded compound in rural New Mexico, USA, then this 86-acre parcel is sure to attract your attention. Listed with Survival Realty for $749,000 (£594k), the property lies in Lincoln County and provides ample bang for your buck.
Three homes occupy the estate and they were all constructed in 2012. There's also a large storage facility, with a one-bedroom, one-bathroom furnished apartment above. In total, there's 6,448 square feet of interior space, so that's more than enough room for you and your entire entourage.
The houses provide five bedrooms and four bathrooms in total and each has its own living room, dining zone and kitchen. Although move-in ready, the pads could certainly do with a little modernisation. However, the houses aren't the main draw of this particular listing. That's because it comes with a two-storey prepper’s bunker that's waiting to provide safety and security to the future owner.
Sadly, we can’t head inside, but this is the entrance to the secure space. Spread over two floors, the bunker is sure to be big enough for a family of four. What’s more, the listing includes 23 acres of junior water rights and almost 50 acres of pastored, farmed and arable land, so you could grow and rear your own food. There’s even a large greenhouse that’s fully insulated, two storage containers and a rainwater harvesting system.
Buyers in Virginia, USA, will love this modern ranch home. Situated on almost seven acres in Goochland County, the residence is up for grabs for $900,000 (£714k) and comes complete with a gorgeous main house and a few hidden surprises.
The home was constructed in 2014 and is still very modern, with bright living rooms, high ceilings and plenty of glass. There's a lounge, a kitchen, a dining area, a family room, four bedrooms and two full bathrooms. What’s more, it boasts a heated saltwater pool, hot tub and surrounding patio overlooking the wooded backyard.
Plus, the pad also offers a spacious, three-car garage with ample workshop space, attic storage and – this is the real gem – a specially constructed, concrete tornado shelter.
The safe room is fully hardened and meets the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) requirements. Essentially, that means the bunker can resist wind pressures and wind-borne debris impacts during an extreme wind event, such as a tornado or hurricane.
The FEMA-approved bunker might have been designed for natural disasters, but it's also perfect as a panic room or apocalypse-proof shelter. At the moment, it's being used for storage, but with a lick of paint and some fixtures, it could be very welcoming. As a bonus, there's also a whole house generator, a well with a brand-new pump and an HVAC unit with a new condenser coil.
If you'd rather be in Arizona, then how about this self-sustaining ranch in Paulden? Priced at $999,061 (£793k), the property provides ample bang for your buck. For starters, there are five fenced acres of land and a 3,207-square-foot main house, but that isn't nearly all!
Dating back to 1996, the house has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, an open-plan living room, a sizable kitchen, a dining room, a soundproofed media room, a laundry room and a pantry. Traditionally styled with exposed beamed ceilings and rock fireplaces, the house could do with a little modernisation, but it's certainly move-in ready.
Yet the house is the least of it. The estate also boasts two high-producing wells and a windmill-powered 10,000-gal storage tank. There’s a vegetable garden, a 1,248-square-foot workshop, a tiny home that could be renovated and leased out, equestrian facilities, ponds and a secure, automatic gate that will keep unwanted visitors out.
What’s more, hidden somewhere in the backyard you’ll find a door that leads into an underground bunker. Offering one long room, the space features thick block walls and is currently completely vacant, so the buyer will need to invest in it to make it comfortable and habitable. Could that be you?
Over in the city of Gaffney, South Carolina, you'll find this imposing brick home. Constructed in 2000, the property sits on 20 private acres and provides 5,970 square feet of inside space. It also has a special feature in its backyard, all for $1.2 million (£952k).
Inside, the home features four bedrooms, four bathrooms and an inviting office or study room, which is perfect for those who work from home. Other spaces include a generous entrance hall, a living room, a dining room and a kitchen.
Outside, there’s an in-ground pool and a hot tub, as well as a four-bay garage with a bonus room above. The space comes equipped with a half bathroom and a kitchenette, so would be ideal for guests.
There’s also a three-bay, 4,228-square-foot workshop that could be utilised as further accommodation and, of course, an underground bunker. While the shelter needs a new entrance door and some interior fixtures to render it safe and comfortable, the shell is there, taking some of the hard work out of the equation.
The bunker has basic concrete block walls but looks like it might be big enough for a bunk bed and toilet. It seems like the space also already has electrics in place. Other extras include a six-pen dog kennel and a four-stall barn, providing comfortable accommodations for horses or other livestock.
If you're working with a bigger budget, then this rural compound in Naples, Idaho, could well pique your interest. Listed with Century 21 Riverstone for $1.5 million (£1.2m), the property isn't cheap, but it's certainly spacious. It totals 130 acres, surveyed into eight lots over three deeded parcels.
The acreage comes with two vacant and very rundown timber cabins, as well as a storage building and a well. Yet the most enticing feature has to be the 4,500-square-foot, pyramid-shaped bunker that lies in the garden. The concrete structure is built into the hillside and is truly impressive, in both size and design.
A secure entrance door leads inside, where you’ll be greeted by a secretive tunnel. The concrete passageway connects to the bunker’s various rooms – all of which are vacant and waiting to be put to good use. As you can see, electrical wiring is already in place, providing the interior with light.
This space lies in the bunker's unusual pyramid. With its high ceiling and sloping walls, it would make for a truly unique living area. Clearly, lots of work is needed to turn the bunker into a cosy and functional shelter. So, if you have the budget and the imagination, make this remarkable backyard bunker your own.
Designed for a wealthy VIP, this impressive compound in Battle Creek, Michigan, could be within your reach. The estate benefits from a 291-acre garden and a nearly 13,500-square-foot, custom-built mansion that overlooks the tranquil waters of a fully-stocked, nine-acre lake.
Listed with Five Star Real Estate for a cool $5.8 million (£4.6m), the house was built in 2018 and offers chic living spaces, five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a gym, a movie theatre, a yoga room and a spa.
Elsewhere, there's a large vegetable garden and a state-of-the-art greenhouse, both built for self-sustainability, as well as a video surveillance security system and three additional homes that could be utilised for your family and friends.
Yet the estate's main selling point is its 5,000-square-foot secure bunker. The entrance to the subterranean space can be seen here, camouflaged among the foliage. The sprawling retreat has been kitted out with everything you could need to survive the end of the world.
There's a kitchen, numerous bathrooms and bedrooms, and even an underground garden with indoor growing equipment, where you could grow your own produce. The bunker also boasts a unique, soundproof room that could come in handy if you need to lay low.
Other plus points include the estate's 7,200-square-foot outbuilding, which could be converted into an additional home, allowing the new owner to create a self-sufficient bolthole.
Over in Coeur d'Alene, a city in Idaho, you'll find this luxurious mountain home. Priced at an eye-watering $10.2 million (£8.1m), it's only available to the super-rich, but offers the right buyer everything they could need to live a safe and secure life in the middle of the Canfield Mountain Natural Area.
Built in 2012, the house spans 11,000 square feet and sits on more than 25 acres of land, making it ideal for a reclusive millionaire.
Inside, the property has large and light-filled rooms, with soaring ceilings, plenty of rustic lodge elements and big windows – some of which provide views of the Spokane River. There’s an expansive great room, a gourmet kitchen, six bedrooms and eight bathrooms. There’s also a guest house that could be leased out to friends or family.
This house boasts so many amenities, including smart home technology, motorised blinds, radiant flooring, a XXL 50 KV generator, a small arms range, a helipad and a 1,600-square-foot backyard where you could grow your own fruit and vegetables. Plus, there’s a luxurious safe room that doubles as a bunker…
Cosy and fully furnished, the bunker is essentially a plush games room, with couches, a flat-screen TV and a pool table, so it can be used even when there isn't a global pandemic.
The space also has a bedroom and we're sure there's enough room to add a kitchen and bathroom. Plus, the home's huge root cellar could also be transformed into a secondary hideaway.
